so schools finally out and the real work has begun. i have been overly involved in marketing myself lately. i just ordered my first set of postcards, i got my first set of tearsheets printed,
and am now in the process of putting together my first batch of mailers to send out to some magazine editors and art directors. i have also just finished my first real commissioned assignment with a local casting company. it was only a tshirt design but im hoping they fall in love with it and give me the chance to turn it into a logo.
for this assignment i bought von glitschka’s “vector basic training” book and i honestly dont think i could have finished without it. at least not at the same quality level. before this assignment i had no real experience in vector illustration, besides the font and type design ive been doing for the raw legends clothing company. but von glitschkas book really made the whole thing easy. for anyone who knows the basics of adobe illustrator or any other vector program and wants to learn how to easily turn sketches or doodles into solid vector drawings i highly recommend this book. it has exercise files and a bunch of images. its totally worth having in your library.
another book i had to pick up was the “graphic artists guild handbook: pricing and ethical guidelines.” this book is a must-have for any artist who is trying to freelance, either full-time or part-time. it is packed with invaluable information about how to price your work, how to promote yourself, keeping paperwork, tax write-offs, how to find a good representative, etc etc. and my personal favorite is the last few pages are full of sample contracts for everything from licensing to invoices. the best part is, you can get it on amazon.com for half the price.
this is only a glimpse of what ive been up to lately. unfortunately, i might have to get a job to make ends meet because these last 2 weeks have helped me realize how difficult, expensive, and time-consuming marketing yourself can be. if anyone has any tips on marketing techniques id be more than happy to chat
